1. Introduction

• What is tinplate? 

• Tinned steel sheet referred to as tinplate, commonly known as tinplate, is a product made of tinning on a thin mild steel plate. The tin plate produced by the hot dip process is called the hot dip tin plate, and the tin plate produced by the electroplating process is called the electroplated tin plate.

• Because about 98~99.8% of the weight of the tin plate is steel, it is a coated steel variety that belongs to metallurgical products.

 

Tinned substrate steel is mostly low carbon mild steel, the carbon content is generally 0.03% ~ 0.13%. Before the development of continuous casting technology, mostly casting boiling steel and gland steel were used. Although these steels have good surface quality and can be rolled to tin-coated substrates, they cannot be used as tin-coated substrates with high forming properties due to the existence of component segregation during the casting and solidification of the ingot and the great difference in mechanical properties in the rolling direction and width direction. Since the rapid development of continuous casting technology in the 1970s, the continuous casting slab is suitable for improving the shape quality and forming stability of the tin plate because of its uniform chemical composition, small segregation and small fluctuation in mechanical properties. At present, the steel used in tinplate has basically been continuously cast.

2. Tinplate characteristics

• The characteristics of the tin plate are largely determined by the characteristics of the tin.

• Tin is a silver-white metal with a light blue color, atomic weight 118.7, specific gravity 7.28, melting point 2320C in the atmosphere does not change color, chemical properties are also very stable. The tin plate can keep the metallic luster of the tin for a long time.

• Tin is a soft metal, so when tin plates are processed to make cans, the tin layer will not crack and fall off.

• Tin compounds are non-toxic, and when a small amount of tin is dissolved in food, it has no adverse effects on the color, taste, nutritional value of food and human health.

• Tin has good brazing properties, so the steel plate is easy to solder after tin plating, and it is easy to process when tin plates are used to make cans and other containers.

• The shape of the tin plate is smooth and bright like a mirror, and it is easy to paint and print.

4. Surface appearance 

It is determined by the surface appearance of the steel base and whether the tin coating is soft melted.

  • Bright surface (B) : The original plate with a smooth surface with a very fine millstone pattern is coated with tin, and then the tin layer is soft melted to obtain a bright surface.
  • Rough surface (R) : The original plate with a certain directional grinding stone pattern surface is plated with tin, and then the tin layer is soft melted to obtain a shiny surface.
  • Silver surface (S) : The original plate with a rough and dull surface is tinned, and then the tin layer is soft melted to obtain a glossy surface.
  • Matte surface (M) : The matte surface is tinned on the original plate with a generally matte surface and then is not softenable.

 

5. Usage Precautions for ETP

  • As ETP is covered by soft metallic tin coatings, due precautions should be taken not to cause scratches by rough handling or vibration during transportation.
  • Paintability, printability, solderability, and mechanical properties of ETP tend to 收deteriorate as time elapses after production. Use as soon as possible after delivery.
  • Although ETP has excellent corrosion resistance, it tends to rust in a humid atmosphere. Use as soon as possible after unpacking.
  • Tin is dissolved by a strongly alkaline solution. When using ETP for making cans for alkaline contents, paint the internal surface.
  • As contents that contain sulfur cause blackening of the ETP surface, paint the internal surface.
